I Want New York
I'll go there by Greyhound
like so many bums & starstruck poets
with head full of dreams
& notebooks of lost words & verses
because everyday
there's a voice outside my door
singing about a man who was all wrong
then I hear the door slam
I don't want this city
I don't want that city
I want New York
I want high skyscrapers
cab drivers cursing in different languages
while I sit in the back confused
while I look out into the harbor
at America's beloved French girl
while I look out from the Empire State Building
& wonder how many people wanted to jump off
while I walk below the Brooklyn Bridge
with the ghosts of Ginsberg & Kerouac
while the sight of me on Wall Street
cause the mobile phone stocks to plummet
while I ride the subway train
with the crowds huddled close for warmth
while I am getting robbed in Central Park
& everybody walking by like they don't care
I want New York to show me why
the midwest & the west coast seems lame
I want New York raw & free
I want New York cold & bitter
I want New York murderous & unforgiving
I want New York dark & gloomy
I want New York to satisfy
these urges of a restless spirit
I want New York to tell the truth
that other cities just won't dare.
